3rd Northeast Games: Nagaland prepares to host biggest sporting event yet
Nagaland is gearing up for a major sporting event – the 2024 Northeast Games (NEOG). This regional competition is expected to be the biggest games the state has ever hosted, according to Advisor to Chief Minister, Abu Metha.
Scheduled for March 18th to 23rd, 2024, the NEOG will see athletes from all eight Northeastern states compete across various different sporting disciplines. This event is being coordinated in partnership with the North East Sports Association (NESA) and the Department of Youth Resources and Sports.
The games will be a multi-city event, held across three districts of Nagaland: Chümoukedima, Dimapur, and Kohima. All sports associations and the NOA team are working tirelessly around the clock to ensure that the games become a grand success.
Due to Nagaland’s current infrastructure limitations compared to other states in the region, the venues have been divided into three districts for this year. Officials acknowledge this as a logistical challenge but express confidence that with cooperation, the games will be a resounding success.
According to Metha, the event will be a grand affair, even exceeding the scale of the recent Nagaland Olympic Games which were seen as a preparatory exercise. This year’s NEOG holds special significance as Nagaland is hosting an interstate multidisciplinary sports event for the first time.
The primary events and the Games Village will be situated at the Regional Center for Sporting Excellence in Chumoukedima District. Athletics event have been scheduled to be held in Kohima and lawn tennis in Dimapur District at Kuda Village. Football and archery competitions will be hosted at the Chumukedima police complex.
With just days to go, Nagaland is buzzing with preparations. From ensuring smooth logistics and accommodation for participants to finalizing the venues, all hands are on deck to ensure a successful game. The Northeast Games promise to be a week of high-octane competition and a celebration of the sporting spirit in the region.
