Tawang hosts National Tug of War Championship 2023
For the first time in history, Tawang town in Arunachal Pradesh is hosting the 36th Senior (Men) and 18th Senior (Men &Women) Federation Cup National Tug of War Championship, where about 429 participants from 15 states and 1 UT are participating in the three-day championship from 29th September to 1st of October 2023.
CM Pema Khandu while welcoming athletes and officials at the Championship said “as we begin this championship, let us celebrate the power of sports to unite, inspire, and transform lives. May the bonds you forge here and the experiences you gain be etched in your memories forever.”

He mentioned that Tug of War is a sport deeply rooted in tradition, strength, and teamwork, and embodies the spirit of unity. It also symbolizes the tenacity required to overcome challenges and emerge victorious, pulling together as one.
The opening ceremony was attended by Education Minister & President of Arunachal Olympic Association, Taba Tedir, Member of Parliament, Tapir Gao, Tawang MLA, Tsering Tashi, Asian Tug-of-War Federation general secretary Madan Mohan, and representatives of Tug-of-War Federation of India Madhavi Patel, NK Chakravarty, Prof Dhananjay Chowdhury among others.
The Chief Minister also encouraged athletes and officials to take time out to explore Tawang and nearby areas where tradition meets modernity, and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the residents.
In addition to the Nation Tug of War Championship, Tawang is also set to witness an extraordinary event: the 1st ever Mega Marathon at an astounding altitude of 10,000 ft above sea level.
The Marathon is being organized in association with the Indian Army.
