Darjeeling’s iconic Toy Train to go green with hydrogen fuel
Indian Railways is working on a new initiative to make the heritage Darjeeling toy train eco-friendly. By the end of 2023, the narrow-gauge Darjeeling heritage route is set to introduce hydrogen-fueled trains, a move aimed at reducing pollution and embracing green energy.
The idea to switch to hydrogen fuel for the toy train came about due to the severe pollution problem in Darjeeling. The Indian Railways has taken notice and decided to take action. The Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has given the green signal for this innovative change.
A prototype of the hydrogen fuel-based train is being developed at the Northern Railway workshop which will undergo testing on the Sonipat-Jind section in Haryana. This testing phase is a crucial step before introducing the trains to the Darjeeling and other heritage routes.
DRM S.K. Chaudhary of Katihar Division suggested the use of electricity for toy trains in the valley section of the route. It will also involve the use of hydrogen fuel. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Authority has embraced this idea as well, aiming to make the heritage trains a symbol of both history and progress.
The transformation of these toy trains is set to maintain their classic charm while adopting modern green technology. The vintage appearance, complete with steam engine-like front and nostalgic sirens, will be retained. However, instead of running on coal, these trains will operate on clean Green Hydrogen fuel.
Hydrogen-powered trains have already been developed by countries like Germany, France, and China. Now, India is joining this innovative group. The new trains will have retrofitted coaches equipped with hydrogen-propulsion engines which will ensure a cleaner and more sustainable travel experience.
These changes align with Indian Railways’ commitment to creating a greener environment and promoting sustainable travel. The introduction of hydrogen and electric trains on the Darjeeling heritage route will be a significant step in this direction.
Tourists and locals alike can look forward to the first hydrogen-fueled heritage train operating within the next two years. The Darjeeling toy train is a beloved icon due to its historical significance and charming appeal. It has become a popular choice for travelers looking for a getaway from the busy schedule of their lives.
It’s worth noting that the Indian Railways has similar plans for other heritage routes across the country, including Matheran Hill Railway, Kalka Shimla Railway, Kangra Valley, Bilmora Waghai, Mhow Patalpani, Nilgiri Mountain Railways, and Marwar-Devgarh. The aim is to preserve the past while embracing a greener future.
