Huge turnout at the inaugural ‘Coal India Guwahati Half Marathon’

The city of Guwahati witnessed a spectacular feat on December 3rd, 2023, when more than 5000 runners from all across the country participated in the first ever ‘Coal India Guwahati Half Marathon‘ conducted at Sarusajai Stadium in the city.

With the theme ‘Amar Run, Amar Utsav’, the event, the first of its kind in the region, has showcased grit, determination and enthusiasm of the people of Assam.

The event, organized by the Indian Army Eastern Command and supported by Coal India Limited and the Govt of Assam, saw an overwhelming response from runners registering in the 21km, 10km and 5km categories.

Taking to X, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his happiness and gratitude for the successful conduct of the first ever ‘Coal India Guwahati Half Marathon’ in Guwahati.

The event also witnessed the participation of several differently-abled runners and more than 800 women who added to the spirit of the event with their determination and grit. While differently-abled participants reflected the inclusive nature of the run, women participation reflected Naari Shakti in true sense.

The half marathon saw Nazeem Pulikkal from Kerala emerge as the winner in the men’s category with a timing of 1 hour 10 minutes and 9 seconds. Phurba Tamang from Sikkim was adjudged the winner in the women’s category with a timing of 1 hour 35 minutes.

The event also saw the participation of several dignitaries, including Smt Nandita Garlosa, Sports & Youth Welfare Minister, Govt of Assam, Lt Gen RP Kalita, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, Lt Gen Manish Erry, GOC 4 Corps.

Speaking at the event, Assam Sports & Youth Welfare Minister extended her congratulations to the participants and organizers for their active involvement.

She conveyed her appreciation to the Indian Army for spearheading this initiative and overseeing such a significant event in Guwahati. Furthermore, she commended the progress made in fostering Civil-Military Integration in Assam.

The Coal India Guwahati Half Marathon was a resounding success and has set the stage for even bigger and better events in the future. The event not only promoted fitness and healthy living but also showcased the beauty of Guwahati and the Northeast to the world.
