The Darjeeling Toy Train, originally part of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways (DHR) and now operated under Mountain Railways of India, has been a renowned transport link between the Darjeeling hills and Siliguri plains since the 1880s. Built in the British era with local hands, its exceptional engineering and popularity as a tourist attraction earned it a UNESCO World Heritage status.

The Darjeeling Toy Train Route

The Darjeeling Toy Train travels 88 km from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station to Darjeeling, passing through ten small stations. Ghum station, at 7400 ft above sea level, is the highest railway station in Asia. The stations include Siliguri Junction, Sukna, Rongtong, Tindharia, Gayabari, Mahanadi, Kurseong Tung, Sonada and Ghum.

Hill Cart Road and the Toy Train’s track run parallel to each other for most of the journey but occasionally cross paths. Batasia Loop is a prominent loop where the train makes a 360-degree turn offering stunning panoramic views. A stop here includes an eco-garden and war memorial dedicated to fallen Indian Army soldiers.

Designed with zigzags and loops for navigating steep gradients, passengers can enjoy breathtaking Himalayan scenery as they travel at a leisurely pace.

The train crosses over five large bridges and 500 smaller ones while traversing hilly loops. There are three routes available for the Darjeeling toy train: two primarily recreational routes and one transportation route between NJP and Darjeeling.

A special steam engine toy train consisting of two first class coaches known as the Red Panda operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays between Darjeeling and Kurseong. The journey between Kurseong and Darjeeling on a train takes approximately three hours covering a distance of 31 km.

Passengers should note that luggage space within the coach is limited to overhead racks and under-seat storage.
