India and Malaysia joint military exercise in Shillong
Military teams from India and Malaysia are currently conducting a joint military exercise in Shillong, Meghalaya, India. The exercise, known as ‘Harimau Shakti – IV’ 2023, began on October 23 and will conclude on November 5.
The exercise is being held at the Foreign Training Node in Shillong’s Umroi Cantonment. A total of 200 soldiers from each army are participating in the exercise. It is aimed at enhancing military capability for conduct of Multi Domain Operations in a sub conventional scenario. During the exercise, both contingents will establish a Joint Command Post & establish an integrated surveillance grid along with a Joint Surveillance Centre.

The exercise is to enhance interoperability between the two armies and to train them in counter-insurgency operations in jungle terrain. It will also focus on developing the skills and capabilities of the soldiers in areas such as jungle survival, tactical shooting, and combat conditioning.
Participating troops will rehearse employment of joint forces in jungle/ semi urban / urban environment. In addition, intelligence collection, collation and dissemination drills will also be rehearsed. The Exercise will also witness employment of Drones/UAVs & Helicopters. Two sides will also practice casualty management and evacuation drills. Both the contingents will discuss logistics management and practice survival training at the Battalion level.
The exercise is being conducted in two phases – the first phase involves training in basic jungle skills and tactics, and the second phase involves a field training exercise in which the soldiers will participate in mock combat operations. The Harimau Shakti – IV 2023 exercise is the fourth iteration of this joint military exercise. The first exercise was held in Malaysia in 2014, and the subsequent exercises have been held in India in 2017, 2019, and 2023.
