Northeast Travels: Undiscovered Tarey Bhir at Sadam, South Sikkim
Situated to the South of Sikkim, close to Sadam in Namchi district, ‘Tarey Bhir’ is a picturesque cliff overlooking the confluence of the Teesta and the Rangeet rivers, the snowy mountain ranges to the north, the chain of bright colorful houses in Kalimpong town along with the sprawling Peshok tea garden.
The cliff is at a precipitous height of around 10,000 feet and offers stunning views of the Himalayas and the valleys below. Away from the hustle of the city, Tarey Bhir is home to variety of bird species, including the endangered black-necked crane. Lucky visitors to this area can even catch a glimpse of the elusive Bharals (blue sheep native to the high Himalayas) grazing on the steep slope.
The word ‘Bhir’ (meaning cliff in Nepali language) in the name is obvious, but there are two versions on the meaning of the word ‘Tarey’ – some elders of Sadam Village say that the place used to be called ‘Tamey Bhir’ originally because the cliff had deposits of ‘tamba’ (meaning Copper in Nepali). Stories of their ancestors digging the slope to collect tamba is still a living folk and many believe that the current name ‘Tarey Bhir’ is a distorted version of the earlier name. Others are of the opinion that Tarey Bhir (meaning Cliff of Stars in Nepali) got its name because a glittering light used to appear like a star under a rock on the cliff after sunset. Many villagers claim to have seen the phenomenon due to which the cliff got its name.
The slope overlooking the cliff is covered with bottle green pines. The steep slope on the right is covered with a green carpet of grass, moss, and shrubs.
A long paved walkway has been constructed along the ridge, offering a thrilling and an adventurous experience and a walk to remember. The road leads to a small temple dedicated to local diety – known as Devi Thaan Mandir. The deep pine-tree forest on the left side of the walkway adds to the charm and beauty of the place.
The local villagers speak of people who fell off the cliff and bodies being found down the cliff when collecting grass for their cattle. However, the local people, despite the dangers of falling still continue to collect grass from the steep cliff face, knowing well the risks and the consequences.
Tarey Bhir, despite its breath-taking beauty is not very well known among the tourists. It is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers. The peaceful surroundings make it an ideal spot for meditation and relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
For those seeking a serene getaway for a few days, the Tarey Bhir Resort is a homestay located beside the ridge on the hilltop. The cozy and comfortable rooms, at very affordable prices, include delicious homemade meals, provide the perfect base to explore the area.
