14 artists from Northeast states awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards is a national honour bestowed on performing artists, teachers and scholars in the field of performing arts.
The honour carries a purse money of Rs. 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh) besides a Tamrapatra and Angavastram. The recipients are selected by the Akademi’s General Council, consisting of distinguished musicians, dancers, theatre artists and scholars in these disciplines and nominees of the Centre/State/UT.
Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankar presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awards in a special ceremony on September, 16th 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the Vice President said that this is the first time in the nation’s history that these artistes are being recognised for their work. He added that it is important to help such artistes in a “structured manner” through several schemes launched by the government.
A total of 84 artistes, including 70 men and 14 women, received the award at the ceremony. Of them, 14 awardees were from different states of the North East.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Chairperson Sandhya Purecha said that the Akademi is awarding those artistes who have given a lifetime to preserve and protect Indian arts and culture. Addressing the gathering, he said “All of you represent the diverse cultural fields and arts of India. All of you are experts in your respective fields and have maintained the continuity of the Indian culture through your practices. You have made an important contribution to keeping the Indian heritage alive. This is a reward for that contribution”.
