Assam Khel Maharan 2023: Igniting the Spirit of Sports in Assam

The Khel Maharan, a sports event, is scheduled to take place in Assam from November 1, 2023, to January 10, 2024. This event aims to boost the enthusiasm for sports, foster healthy competition, and promote unity throughout the state.

The Khel Maharan event is expected to attract over 50 lakhs sports enthusiasts from different parts of Assam. It will bring together athletes of all age groups, including young talents, experienced veterans, and senior sportsmen. This event will witness active participation from state sports associations, local youth clubs, and experienced athletes.

The competition will be held in four stages namely Municipal level or Gram Panchayat level, Assembly Constituency level, District level and State level. The Municipal level or Gram Panchayat level will be held from November 1 to 15, the Assembly Constituency level will be from November 27 to December 11, District level from December 19 to 23 and the State level from January 6 to 10.

The teams will first be created in the villages, and the top teams and players will advance to the Gram Panchayat level. After that, they will progress to the assembly constituency-level teams before eventually joining the district-level. Qualified teams and sports persons from district level will finally compete at the state level.

The Assam Khel Maharan, was introduced by Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs. It aimed at encouraging the youth of Assam to participate in sports and showcase their sporting skills. The main objective behind organizing Khel Maharan 2023 is to nurture and develop sports talent in Assam.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is excited for this event. Making the announcement on X, he said, “24 days to go for Khel Maharan – Assam’s biggest ever Jan Andolan for Sports. Over 50 lakh sportspersons will participate in various games right from the village level. Maharaj Dodan, who had tremendous physical prowess, is our mascot.”

Khel Maharan 2023 will feature sports like Athletics, Football, Volleyball, Kabaddi and Kho-Kho. The competition categories include Under-19 (male and female) and Above-19 (male and female).
