Manipur finishes 7th in the Goa National Games with 82 medals

Manipur ended its campaign at the 37th National Games in Goa on Thursday with a total of 82 medals, including 30 gold, 22 silver, and 31 bronze. This is the state’s best performance at the National Games, beating its previous record of 50 medals won at the 36th edition in Gujarat.

Manipur stands at the 2nd position under per capita rankings while it secured the 7th position in the medal tally rankings. Their outstanding performances have delivered a message of hope, resilience and perseverance to the people of the state.

Manipur’s contingent competed in 25 out of the 44 disciplines at the National Games and won medals in 19 of them. The state’s athletes performed particularly well in combat sports, winning a total of 20 medals in boxing, wrestling, and judo. Manipur also won a number of medals in weightlifting, archery, and athletics. Tennis, aquatics, shooting, athletics, squash, badminton, yogasana and golf could not win medals.

Manipur’s performance at the National Games at a time when the state is going through a turmoil phase shows the rich sporting tradition of the people. Manipur has produced a number of world-class athletes over the years, including Olympic medalists like Mary Kom and Mirabai Chanu. The state’s success at the National Games is also a result of the hard work and dedication of its athletes, coaches, and officials.

During the Goa National Games, Phamdom Ranibala set a new record in the snatch category by lifting 90 kg. This surpassed the previous record held by Mirabai Chanu, who lifted 86 kg on March 29, 2023. Manipur’s impressive performance in wushu added 9 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze medals to their overall tally.

The Manipur Olympic Association has congratulated the state’s athletes and officials on their success at the National Games. MOA president Th. Radheshyam said, “The overall performance at the 37th National Games with 30 gold, 22 silver and 31 bronze is a remarkable achievement. The hard work of all the players, dedication by the coaches and managers need to be recognised. Upgradation of modern equipment and scientific training is the need of hour.”

Manipur’s performance at the National Games is also a source of pride for the entire Northeast region. The state is the only Northeastern state to finish in the top 10 of the medal tally. Manipur’s success is an inspiration to other Northeastern states, and shows that they can excel at the national and international level.
