PM Modi unveils ₹11,600 crore development bonanza for Northeast India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a two-day visit to Assam, unveiled a slew of transformative infrastructure projects worth ₹11,600 crore, underlining his government’s commitment to the development of the Northeast region. The initiatives, spanning various sectors like pilgrimage, healthcare, sports, and urban infrastructure, aim to improve the quality of life and unlock the economic potential of the region.
Temple Tourism Boost: A ₹498 crore project for the Kamakhya temple corridor, a major pilgrimage site, was launched, aiming to enhance pilgrim experience and accessibility.
Improved Connectivity: The second phase of the ‘Asom Mala‘ program, involving the upgrade and construction of 43 roads with 38 bridges, was announced, with an investment of ₹34.44 billion. Additionally, a six-lane road from the new Guwahati airport terminal (₹3.58 billion) will improve connectivity. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the four-lane road from Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur (Rs 14.51 billion) and another four-lane road from Dolabari to Jamuguri (Rs 5.92 billion).
Focus on Healthcare: Foundation stones were laid for the integrated new building of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (₹32.5 billion) and Karimganj Medical College and Hospital (₹5.78 billion), strengthening healthcare infrastructure.
Sports Infrastructure Upliftment: The Nehru Stadium in Guwahati will be upgraded to FIFA standards with a ₹8.31 billion investment, while a new sports complex in Chandrapur (₹300 crore) will boost sporting activities.
Urban Rejuvenation: The Unity Mall project in Guwahati (₹2.97 billion) aims to revitalize the city center and create economic opportunities.
The launch of these projects emphasizes the Northeast’s crucial role in India’s economic growth.
