A tripartite agreement signed today strengthens the collaboration between the North Eastern Council (NEC), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), and the Indian Institute of Management Shillong (IIM Shillong) for propelling development in the North Eastern region. This agreement aims to sustain and further deepen the engagement of IIM Shillong through the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis.

Established in 2016, the Dr. Kalam Centre serves as a vital think tank focused on unlocking the region’s growth potential. It assists North Eastern states and implementing agencies in planning and executing projects, promoting innovation, and functioning as a repository of best practices.

The renewed agreement emphasizes collaboration and avoiding duplication of efforts. The center will work closely with NEC, state governments, and other stakeholders to identify and address key development challenges. This includes areas like infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, and skill development.

Professor D. P. Goyal, the Director of IIM Shillong, expressed contentment and praised Dr. Kalam’s vision for progress. He highlighted the important actions taken by the center and envisioned expanding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance relationships among the three organizations and reinforce their dedication to the region’s development.

Moses Chalai, Secretary of NEC said, “We commend the Centre’s contribution and urge it to align its work with the region’s aspirations and Central Government policies.” He also expressed his happiness about finishing the construction of the administrative building, which was sponsored by MDoNER through NEC, and suggested organizing a formal inauguration ceremony.

Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of DoNER said, “We envision the Dr. Kalam Centre becoming a vital think tank and propose introducing North East Development Fellows through IIM Shillong to strengthen governance.”

Atul Kulkarni, a member of the Board of Governors of IIM Shillong, emphasized the importance of the Dr. Kalam Centre in meeting the region’s aspirations and promoting good governance.

This renewed tripartite agreement is a positive step towards leveraging the expertise of IIM Shillong for the benefit of the North East. By focusing on research, capacity building, and collaborative partnerships, the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis is poised to play a vital role in unlocking the region’s immense potential.
