43 Manipuri Athletes in the Indian contingent at the 19th Asian Games 2023

The excitement is building as 43 talented athletes from Manipur gear up to represent India at the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs recently released the official list of 634 (Men – 320; Women – 314) athletes. Despite having internal issues within Manipur, it is able to contribute a significant portion to the Indian contingent.
These athletes will compete in various sporting disciplines, showcasing their skills on the international stage. Here is a breakdown of the sports in which Manipuri athletes will participate:

Aquatics:

London Hemam from Manipur will be one among others who will represent India in the diving event.

Cycling:

Two cyclists, Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam and Rojit Singh Yanglem will compete in the Men’s sprint.

Football:

There are 13 participants from Manipur alone, in both men’s and women’s football team. The Indian men’s football team includes Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem, Roshan Naorem, Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Amarjit Singh Kiyam, and Naorem Mahesh Singh.
The Indian women’s football team features Elangbam Panthoi Chanu, Grace Dangmei, Ashalata Devi Loitongbam, Priyangika Devi Naorem, Sweety Devi Ngangbam, Bala Devi Ngangom, and Ranjana Chanu Sorokhaibam.

Hockey:

Nilakanta Sharma will be a part of the Indian men’s hockey team. Bichu Devi Kharibam and Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam will be in the women’s hockey team.

Judo:

Indubala Devi Maibam will compete in the Women’s 78kg category.

Kayaking and Canoeing:

Sunil Singh Salam will participate in men’s C1 1000m. Ribason Singh Ningthoujam and Gyaneshwor Singh Philem will join forces for men’s C2- 500m (team).

Neha Devi Leichonbam will compete in women’s C2 200m (team). Binita Chanu Oinam and Soniya Devi Phairembam will be part of the women’s K4 500m (team).

Rowing:

Thangjam Priya Devi will showcase her skills in Women’s coxless four and coxed eight. H Tendenthoi Devi will compete in the Women’s coxed eight.

Sepaktakraw:

The Indian men’s Sepaktakraw team from Manipur includes Regu players Niken Singh Khangembam, John Meitei Laishram, Henary Singh Wahengbam, and Akash Yumnam. In the Quadrant, Malemnganba Singh Sorokhaibam will represent India.

The Indian women’s Sepaktakraw team from Manipur features Regu players Maipak Devi Ayekam, Leirentonbi Devi Elangbam, and Priya Devi Elangbam. In the Quadrant, Chaoba Devi Oinam and Ayekpam Priya Devi will compete.

Weightlifting:

Mirabai Chanu will compete in the Women’s 49kg category. Bindyarani Devi will participate in the Women’s 55kg category.

Wushu:

Sunil Singh Mayanglambam will participate in men’s 56kg as well as men’s changquan. Roshibina Devi Naorem will showcase her skills in women’s 60kg.

Apart from the athletes, Manipur will also be well-represented by coaches and officials who will be part of the national contingent. These athletes have dedicated themselves to rigorous training and hard work, and their participation in the Asian Games is a source of pride for Manipur and India as a whole.
