In a move celebrating both taste and tradition, the Assam government has declared the Kaji Nemu, a unique lemon variety known for its distinct aroma and health benefits, as the state’s official fruit. This announcement, made on February 13th, 2024, by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, elevates the Kaji Nemu to a position of cultural and economic significance.

The Kaji Nemu, also known as the Assam lemon, has a distinctive citrusy fragrance that sets it apart from other lemon varieties. It thrives in Assam’s climate, growing year-round with peak seasons in spring and autumn. This versatile fruit finds its way into various Assamese dishes, adding a zesty punch to curries, pickles, and chutneys. Beyond its culinary uses, the Kaji Nemu is valued for its high vitamin C content and antioxidant properties.

The state fruit designation isn’t merely symbolic. It’s seen as a strategic move to promote the cultivation and commercialization of the Kaji Nemu. The fruit already holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring its authenticity and origin. With its new status, the Kaji Nemu is expected to gain further recognition and market traction, both within India and internationally.

“Kaji Nemu is the carrier of Assam’s tradition, culture and heritage. Also known as Assam lemon (Citrus limon), it is one of the best-known fruits that have medicinal properties and special aroma which is not grown in any other state or country,” stated Minister Bora.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Kaji Nemu’s ability to “shine on the global fruit map”. He expressed hope that the state fruit status will boost self-reliance and production, further strengthening Assam’s agricultural sector.

He wrote on X, “Our government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the State Fruit of Assam. With its unique aroma & antioxidant properties, Assam lemon has enriched our local cuisines.”

The Kaji Nemu’s journey from local favorite to state fruit symbolises more than just citrusy delight. It signifies the growing recognition of Assam’s unique agricultural heritage and the potential of its indigenous produce to find a prominent place on the global stage. As farmers nurture their Kaji Nemu groves with renewed enthusiasm, the future holds a tangy promise of both economic prosperity and cultural pride for Assam.
