Roshibina Devi and Sushila Chanu from Manipur honored with the Arjuna Award
Two female athletes from Manipur, Naorem Roshibina Devi and Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, were honored with the Arjuna Award 2023 on Tuesday. They were part of a group of 26 athletes who received this recognition, the second-highest sports honor in the country. President Draupadi Murmu presented the awards at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.
Sushila Chanu, aged 31, is an exceptional hockey player. She won two bronze medals in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, and the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, in 2022. Additionally, she achieved a gold medal at the FIH Nation Cup held in Valencia, Spain, in the same year, 2022.
Making the announcement on X CM N.Biren Singh said, “Hearty Congratulations to Hockey champion, Ms Sushila Chanu on being honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award 2023. You have carried forward the legacy of Manipur’s sporting capabilities with your hard work and dedication, inspiring thousands more to follow the lead. Likewise, 23-year-old wushu athlete Roshibina Devi secured two silver medals at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, and the World Wushu Championship in Texas, United States, during the same year. Additionally, she earned a gold medal at the Moscow Wushu Stars Championship held in Moscow, Russia, in 2023.

The award is presented to athletes as a gesture of recognition by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, acknowledging their remarkable contributions to sports and games.
