In a move aimed at empowering and supporting women in the state, the Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, has announced a new scheme providing annual financial assistance of ₹ 6,000 to women aged 40 years and above.

This initiative known as Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang scheme was announced at a ceremony held on the Nupi Lan Day 2023 programme at the Nupi Lan Complex in Imphal.

The Nupi Lan were two fierce revolutionary wars led by Manipuri women during the British era against colonial authorities. The CM paid floral tribute to the brave women freedom fighters who took part in the Second Nupi Lan.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the vital role women play in Manipur’s society, their contributions to the economy and the challenges they often face.

He said, “The scheme will help women in Manipur who are over 40 by offering financial aid and resources. The goal is to boost their economic independence and improve their overall well-being. About 4 lakhs women will benefit from this initiative, supporting them in various ways for their livelihoods.”

He highlighted that many of the schemes launched by the government so far have not been beneficial specifically to women aged 40 years and above. With this inclusive scheme they will be able to manage their families well. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening women’s welfare and ensuring their access to resources and opportunities.

The initiative has been met with widespread praise and anticipation across Manipur. Many women have expressed their gratitude for the much-needed financial support which will ease the burden of household expenses.

Talking about the courage displayed by Manipuri women during the Seven Years Devastation (Chahi Taret Khuntakpa) period, the CM remembered their efforts in reclaiming their homeland.

In order to honour the selfless contributions made by Manipuri women for the cause of their motherland during the Nupi Lan, the CM announced the renaming of the road stretch from from Pureiromba Khongnangkhong to Nityaipat Chuthek as ‘Nupi Lal Road’. “This decision is a tribute to the historical significance of Nupi Lan and a recognition of the enduring strength and resilience displayed by Manipuri women.”, CM Biren Singh said.
